Philippines lifeguard training
Tao training teaches discipline and respect for the sea
Our lifeguard training
The week after our annual General Assembly, 40 selected Lost Boys begin one of the most demanding lifeguard training programmes in the Philippines.
For 14 days, Tao Dipnay Farm transforms into a rigorous training ground under the instruction of the Philippine Coast Guard. Wake-up call is at 4:30 am and it’s followed by intense physical drills, chants that build camaraderie and daily lessons in discipline and teamwork.
Learning to save lives
The trainees undergo search-and-rescue simulations, learn basic life support training, and practice handling real-life emergencies in open water. In one powerful exercise, participants experience what it feels like to be submerged and disoriented — a vital lesson in both empathy and respect for the sea.
A test of endurance
The course ends with a three-mile open-water swim from Darocoton to Tao Dipnay Farm, a test of endurance and determination. Of the 40 who most recently began, 36 completed the challenge – the highest pass rate of any organisation trained by the Coast Guard this year. Those who finish earn certification and a huge sense of pride. They join the ranks of 84 Lost Boys who have passed over the past three years.
Safety, always
“The ocean gives us everything,” Eddie says. “But it demands respect. This training reminds us that safety isn’t just a protocol – it’s a way of honouring the sea and protecting each other.” For Tao, safety isn’t a box to tick. It’s a philosophy. Travelling through one of the most remote and beautiful regions in the Philippines means taking the ocean seriously. With strong training, teamwork and respect for nature, Tao’s crew ensure that every guest can explore Palawan’s islands with confidence. The General Assembly and lifeguard training together capture what Tao stands for: community, resilience and joy. “We don’t just build boats,” Eddie says. “We build people. Confident, capable, kind. That’s what makes Tao different.”
