Tao Kalahi Foundation
Sharing the spirit of Tao beyond our tribe
Community-led tourism
The Tao Kalahi Foundation ensures that those who live on the islands we explore also share in what tourism brings: opportunity, pride and a future built from within.
We believe that tourism should change more than just travellers. The idea for a Tao foundation began with a simple idea: the islands we visit belong to everyone who calls them home. Even those outside our crew deserve to benefit from what tourism helps us achieve. Over time, we’ve turned that belief into a new kind of movement — one that redistributes opportunity across families, villages and generations.
Building schools, shaping futures
In our earliest expeditions, we built bamboo classrooms in the villages that welcomed us. For children who once had to paddle across open water to reach school, these spaces became safe places to learn and grow. Today, the Foundation supports teachers, scholarships and training programmes so island kids can study close to home – and, sometimes, all the way to university.
Livelihood and skills
Across Palawan, we train locals in boatbuilding, cooking, guiding, farming and craft. Many were once unemployed; now they earn livelihoods that draw from their land and sea. Each skill learned strengthens both family and community – proof that tourism can sustain rather than extract.
The Foundation building
At the heart of Tao Dipnay Farm stands a bamboo-arched hall – the Foundation building. Part workshop, part gathering place, it’s a cathedral to community. Here, the women give massages and sell homemade soaps and oils. In the off season it’s where the tribe meets for training and it becomes a celebration of learning, laughter and renewal.
Travel as transformation
Every expedition helps fund the Foundation. Every guest who sails with Tao becomes part of this cycle – a quiet revolution in how tourism can look, feel and give back.
