Tao women’s association
The mothers who make our islands home
A matriarchal force
Strong, skilled and quietly fierce, the women’s association of Tao turns remote camps into living communities, grounding our expeditions in care and craft.
In Palawan’s matriarchal culture, women hold families together — now they help hold Tao together, too. Once limited to domestic roles, many have become leaders, earning livelihoods as cooks, farmers, housekeepers and managers. Their intuition, strength and discipline guide not just our camps, but the spirit of Tao itself. We are proud that 60% of our management team is female.
From masseuses to management
What began with a few camp masseuses has grown into a network of over 150 women across the islands — earning a living through massage, weaving, soap-making and hospitality. Supported by the Tao Kalahi Foundation, they train close to home, building confidence, independence and a new sense of possibility for their families.
Craft and creation
From virgin coconut oil to hand-sewn beddings, the women’s association creates the essentials of Tao life. Their soaps, oils and weavings are made using natural ingredients from the land – lemongrass, calamansi, gugo bark, guava leaves. Every product carries a story of resourcefulness and self-reliance. When women earn, families change. Many of Tao’s mothers now provide more for their households than their husbands once did. Alongside new income comes agency — over work, education and even family planning. What began as training has grown into transformation.
